Which Zimbabwean law governs data protection and cyber security?
The Cyber and Data Protection Act, 2021 (Act No. 5 of 2021) [Chapter 11:12], gazetted on 3 December 2021, is Zimbabwe's principal data protection and cybercrime statute; it designates the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) as the Cyber Security and Data Protection Authority.

Why Lawstronaut for Zimbabwean legal research
Zimbabwean legal information is spread across the Government Gazette, Parliament, ministries, regulators, the courts, and public legal information repositories. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Zimbabwe legal coverage
Zimbabwe is a common-law jurisdiction whose common law is Roman-Dutch — inherited via the Cape — applied alongside statute and African customary law for personal and family matters. Primary legislation, made up of Acts of Parliament organised by Chapter number and Statutory Instruments, is published in the Zimbabwe Government Gazette by the Government Printer, with widely used public copies on the Zimbabwe Legal Information Institute (ZimLII) and Veritas. Laws are enacted by the bicameral Parliament — the National Assembly and the Senate. The apex courts are the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, above the High Court and specialised courts such as the Labour Court and the Administrative Court, while regulators include the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, SECZim, POTRAZ, IPEC, and ZIMRA. Legal materials are published in English.
Zimbabwean law has moved quickly: the current Constitution (the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act, 2013) was amended in 2017 and 2021, the Cyber and Data Protection Act of 2021 introduced a new data-protection and cybercrime regime, and monetary and currency law has been reset repeatedly — including the 2024 introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Zimbabwe legal research answer correct today.
