Q

Which Yukon statute governs access to information and the protection of personal privacy held by public bodies?

A

The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, SY 2018, c. 9 — which came into force on 1 April 2021 and replaced the earlier 2002 Act — governs access to records and the protection of personal information held by Yukon public bodies. It is enacted as a Statute of the Yukon and consolidated on the Government of Yukon's official legislation website.

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Yukon legal research

Yukon legal information is spread across the territorial legislation website, the Yukon Gazette, government departments, regulators, courts, and — because Yukon sits within Canada's federal system — overlapping federal statutes and land-claim and self-government agreements. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Yukon legal coverage

Yukon is a territory of Canada with a common-law legal system in the English tradition. Legislative power is exercised by the Yukon Legislative Assembly, a unicameral body operating under the federal Yukon Act (SC 2002, c. 7); primary legislation is enacted as Statutes of the Yukon and, together with regulations, is consolidated and published on the Government of Yukon's official legislation website (laws.yukon.ca) and in the Yukon Gazette. The courts comprise the Territorial Court of Yukon, the Supreme Court of Yukon, and the Court of Appeal of Yukon, which shares its bench with British Columbia; federal statutes and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms also apply. Legal materials are published in English, with French-language rights recognized under the Languages Act.

Yukon law moves in step with both territorial reform and Yukon First Nations land-claim and self-government agreements flowing from the 1993 Umbrella Final Agreement, which continue to shape governance and lawmaking. Recent statutes such as the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (SY 2018, c. 9, in force 2021) reset core public-sector obligations — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Yukon legal research answer correct today.
