WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Sri Lankan legal research

Sri Lankan legal information is spread across the Government Gazette, the Ministry of Justice's LawNet, Parliament, ministries, statutory regulators, and the courts — and published across three languages. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Sri Lanka legal coverage

Sri Lanka is a mixed-law jurisdiction: Roman-Dutch law forms the residual common law for areas such as property and obligations, English common law shapes commercial and criminal law, and personal laws — Kandyan law, Thesawalamai, and Muslim law — apply to particular communities, all overlaid by a large body of statute. Primary legislation is made by the unicameral Parliament of Sri Lanka as Acts, published in the Government Gazette by the Department of Government Printing and consolidated through the Ministry of Justice's LawNet. The court structure runs from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal down through the High Courts, District Courts, and Magistrate's Courts, while regulators such as the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission issue binding directions. Legal materials are published in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Sri Lankan law is changing rapidly: the 21st Amendment to the Constitution (2022) reworked executive and parliamentary powers, the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022 introduced a comprehensive data-protection regime with a phased commencement, and recent statutes such as the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023 and the Online Safety Act, No. 9 of 2024 have reshaped governance and digital regulation — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Sri Lanka legal research answer correct today.
