Q

What is the supreme law of South Sudan?

A

The Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011 (as amended), which entered into force on 9 July 2011 at independence, is the supreme law of the land; any other law inconsistent with it is void to the extent of the inconsistency. It has since been amended to give effect to the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for South Sudanese legal research

South Sudanese legal information is spread across the official gazette, ministries, statutory agencies, regulators, courts, and publication sources. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About South Sudan legal coverage

South Sudan is a common-law jurisdiction with strong customary-law elements, shaped by its Anglo-Egyptian and Sudanese legal inheritance and by the statutes enacted since independence in 2011. Primary legislation is enacted by the Transitional National Legislature and published in the South Sudan Gazette, while regulatory policy sits across ministries and statutory agencies — the Bank of South Sudan, the Ministry of Petroleum and the National Petroleum and Gas Commission, and the National Communication Authority, among others. Case law spans the Supreme Court of South Sudan, the Court of Appeal, and the High Court. Legal materials are published primarily in English, the official working language of government.

South Sudanese law is still being built out: the Transitional Constitution of 2011 has been repeatedly amended to implement the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) and to extend the transitional period, and foundational statutes such as the Petroleum Act 2012, the Companies Act 2012, and the Bank of South Sudan Act continue to be supplemented by new regulations — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a South Sudan legal research answer correct today.
