Which Nunavut law establishes Inuktut, English, and French as the official languages of the territory?
The Official Languages Act, SNu 2008, c.10, recognizes the Inuit Language (Inuktut), English, and French as the official languages of Nunavut and sets out the rights attached to each; it was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, published in the Nunavut Gazette, and is maintained in the Department of Justice consolidation of statutes.

Why Lawstronaut for Nunavut legal research
Nunavut legal information is spread across the territorial gazette, the Department of Justice consolidation, the Legislative Assembly, land-claim institutions of public government, regulators, and the courts. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Nunavut legal coverage
Nunavut is a common-law jurisdiction and a Canadian territory created on 1 April 1999 under the federal Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Agreement (the Inuit land claim). Its unicameral Legislative Assembly runs on consensus government without political parties and enacts the Statutes of Nunavut, which are published in the Nunavut Gazette and maintained in the Department of Justice consolidation of statutes and regulations. Nunavut has a unified single-level trial court — the Nunavut Court of Justice, the only such combined superior-and-territorial court in Canada — with appeals to the Court of Appeal of Nunavut and, ultimately, the Supreme Court of Canada. Much of the territory's public administration flows through institutions of public government created by the Nunavut Agreement, including the Nunavut Impact Review Board, the Nunavut Planning Commission, and the Nunavut Water Board. Legal materials are published in English and French, with Inuktut (Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun) as an official language of the territory.
Nunavut law continues to evolve as a young jurisdiction: the Official Languages Act (SNu 2008, c.10) and the Inuit Language Protection Act (SNu 2008, c.17) reshaped language rights; the Education Act and successive amendments remain contested and frequently revised; and land, wildlife, and resource regulation under the Nunavut Agreement changes as institutions of public government issue new decisions — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Nunavut legal research answer correct today.
