Q

Which law sets out the general criminal offences in Nauru?

A

The Crimes Act 2016 (Act No. 18 of 2016) is the principal statute codifying criminal offences in Nauru, replacing the former Criminal Code inherited from Queensland; it was enacted by the Parliament of Nauru and published in the Republic of Nauru Government Gazette.

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Nauruan legal research

Nauruan legal information is spread across the Government Gazette, Parliament, government departments, a small number of statutory bodies, the courts, and regional repositories. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Nauru legal coverage

Nauru is a common-law jurisdiction: English common law of general application forms the base layer, overlaid by statutes enacted by the unicameral Parliament of Nauru and published in the Republic of Nauru Government Gazette. The Constitution of Nauru, in force at independence on 31 January 1968, is the supreme law. The court system runs from the District Court and Family Court up to the Supreme Court of Nauru, with the Nauru Court of Appeal established in 2018. Legislation and judgments are issued in English.

Nauruan law has moved in significant ways in recent years: the Crimes Act 2016 (Act No. 18 of 2016) replaced the inherited Queensland-based Criminal Code, and in 2018 Nauru ended appeals to the High Court of Australia and stood up its own Court of Appeal — so citations to superseded instruments or the former appellate route can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Nauru legal research answer correct today.
