A

The Myanmar Companies Law 2017 (Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Law No. 29/2017), enacted on 6 December 2017 and brought into force on 1 August 2018, replaced the Myanmar Companies Act 1914 and governs the incorporation, registration, and administration of companies, which is overseen by the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA).

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Myanmar legal research

Myanmar legal information is spread across the Myanmar Gazette, ministries, statutory agencies, regulators, courts, and publication sources — much of it in Burmese, with older statutes surviving only in English-language editions. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Myanmar legal coverage

Myanmar is a common-law jurisdiction whose framework was inherited from British colonial rule and layered over a body of nineteenth- and twentieth-century codes — including the Penal Code, the Contract Act, the Civil and Criminal Procedure Codes, and the Evidence Act — that remain in force alongside modern statutes. Primary legislation is enacted by the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Union Assembly) and published in the Myanmar Gazette, while the Union Attorney General's Office maintains official law databases. Regulatory authority is spread across bodies such as the Central Bank of Myanmar, the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA), the Myanmar Investment Commission, and the Internal Revenue Department, with the Supreme Court of the Union at the apex of the court system alongside the Constitutional Tribunal of the Union. Legal materials are published primarily in Burmese, with many older statutes available in English.

Myanmar law has changed rapidly in recent years: the Myanmar Companies Law 2017 replaced the century-old Companies Act 1914, the Myanmar Investment Law 2016 consolidated the foreign and domestic investment regimes, and since February 2021 a large volume of new laws, amendments, and orders has been issued as governing authority passed to the State Administration Council — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Myanmar legal research answer correct today.
