Q

What is the foundational law establishing the national government of the Federated States of Micronesia?

A

The Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia, which entered into force on 10 May 1979, establishes the national government and the federation of the four states of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap; national statutes are enacted as Public Laws of the Congress and codified in the Code of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM Code).

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Micronesian legal research

Micronesian legal information is spread across the codified national statute book, the Public Laws of the Congress, national government departments, the courts, and four separate state governments. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Micronesia legal coverage

The Federated States of Micronesia is a federal constitutional republic in free association with the United States under the Compact of Free Association. Its legal system blends American-style common law — inherited from the period of United States administration under the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands — with local customary law, which the Constitution expressly recognises. The Constitution took effect on 10 May 1979; national statutes are enacted as Public Laws by the unicameral Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia and codified in the Code of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM Code). Judicial power is vested in the FSM Supreme Court, with each of the four states — Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap — maintaining its own constitution, legislature and courts. English is the official language of the national government.

Micronesian law evolves through the Public Laws of successive Congresses and periodic amendments to the FSM Code, while the economic and legal relationship with the United States shifted again with the 2023 renewal of the Compact of Free Association's economic provisions — so citations to superseded provisions can be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Micronesia legal research answer correct today.
