WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Maldivian legal research

Maldivian legal information is spread across the Government Gazette, the People's Majlis, the Attorney General's Office, ministries, statutory regulators, and the courts. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Maldives legal coverage

The Maldives is an Islamic republic with a mixed legal system that combines English common law with Islamic Sharia, the latter applying particularly to family, personal status, and certain criminal matters. The Constitution of the Republic of Maldives 2008 is the supreme law; primary legislation (Acts, qaanoon) is enacted by the People's Majlis and published in the Government Gazette, while the Attorney General's Office maintains consolidated compilations of laws and regulations. The court system runs from the Supreme Court and High Court through the Superior Courts (including the Civil, Criminal, Family, and Drug Courts) to the Magistrate Courts. Financial and market regulation sits with statutory bodies such as the Maldives Monetary Authority, the Capital Market Development Authority, and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority. Legal materials are published primarily in Dhivehi, with English translations available for many major statutes.

Maldivian law has changed rapidly in recent years: the 2008 Constitution introduced a modern separation of powers, a modern Penal Code came into force in 2015 to replace the earlier criminal framework, and the Income Tax Act (Law No. 25/2019) reshaped taxation from 2020 alongside the earlier Goods and Services Tax Act (Law No. 10/2011) — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Maldives legal research answer correct today.
