Which Israeli law governs the protection of personal data and privacy?
The Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981 (Chok Haganat HaPratiyut), as amended — most recently by Amendment No. 13 (2024) — is the framework statute governing personal data protection and privacy in Israel. It was enacted by the Knesset and published in Reshumot (Sefer HaChukkim), and is enforced by the Privacy Protection Authority within the Ministry of Justice.

Why Lawstronaut for Israeli legal research
Israeli legal information is spread across the Knesset, Reshumot, government ministries, statutory regulators, courts, and publication sources. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Israel legal coverage
Israel has a mixed legal system: a common-law tradition inherited from the British Mandate, overlaid with civil-law statutes and religious personal-status law. It has no single written constitution; instead, a series of Basic Laws (Chukei Yesod) enacted by the Knesset serve a quasi-constitutional role. Primary legislation is passed by the unicameral Knesset and published in Reshumot, the official gazette — with statutes in Sefer HaChukkim and secondary legislation in Kovetz HaTakanot. Regulatory policy sits across the Ministry of Justice, the Bank of Israel, the Israel Securities Authority, the Competition Authority, and the Privacy Protection Authority, while case law spans the Supreme Court (which also sits as the High Court of Justice), the District and Magistrates' Courts, and the Labour Courts. Legal materials are published primarily in Hebrew, with Arabic and unofficial English translations in circulation.
Israeli law changes quickly: Amendment No. 13 to the Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981, overhauled the data-protection enforcement regime and took effect in 2025; the Companies Law, 5759-1999, and capital-markets rules are regularly amended; and constitutional questions around the Basic Laws remain highly active — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps an Israel legal research answer correct today.
