Why Lawstronaut for Guernsey legal research
Guernsey legal information is spread across Guernsey Legal Resources, La Gazette Officielle, the States and their committees, regulators, and the courts. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Guernsey legal coverage
Guernsey is the seat of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency that is not part of the United Kingdom or the European Union and legislates for itself. Its legal system rests on a customary law of Norman French origin, layered over time with statute and English common-law influence. Primary legislation takes the form of Laws (Projets de Loi that receive Royal Assent by Order in Council of the Privy Council), supplemented by Ordinances made by the States of Deliberation and by Statutory Instruments and Regulations, published through Guernsey Legal Resources and La Gazette Officielle. The courts run from the Magistrate's Court up through the Royal Court of Guernsey and the Court of Appeal, with final appeal to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Alderney and Sark retain their own legislatures — the States of Alderney and the Chief Pleas of Sark. Legislation is published in English.
Guernsey's law changes steadily, especially in financial services and data protection: the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2017 took effect on 25 May 2018 alongside the EU GDPR, and the finance framework overseen by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission is regularly amended — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Guernsey legal research answer correct today.
