Does Goa apply a uniform civil code, and what is its legal basis?
Yes. Goa is the only Indian state that applies a uniform civil code — the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867 (Código Civil Português), retained in force after Goa's 1961 incorporation into India and continued as existing law by the Goa, Daman and Diu (Administration) Act, 1962. Goa-specific amendments and state statutes are published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Goa.

Why Lawstronaut for Goan legal research
Goan legal information is spread across the state gazette, the Legislative Assembly, government departments, regulators, the courts, and central legislation repositories. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Goa legal coverage
Goa is a state of India and operates within India's common-law federal system, but it is unique among Indian states in retaining a body of Portuguese-origin civil law — the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867 — which functions as a common (uniform) civil code for the territory. Alongside it sit the statutes of the Goa Legislative Assembly and central Indian Acts extended to the state. Primary state legislation is published in the Official Gazette of the Government of Goa, while central laws appear in the Gazette of India and India Code. The judiciary runs from subordinate and district courts up to the High Court of Bombay at Goa (Panaji Bench), with appeals to the Supreme Court of India. Regulatory functions sit with state departments and boards. Konkani is the official language, with English used for legislation and the courts and Marathi and Portuguese also present in older materials.
Goan law changes frequently: the state's retained uniform civil code returned to national prominence during India's 2023–2024 debate over a Uniform Civil Code, and amendments to land, tenancy, town-and-country-planning, tourism, and tax legislation move on their own schedule, while central Acts extended to Goa are revised regularly — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Goa legal research answer correct today.
