What is the current constitutional framework of the Union of the Comoros?
The Constitution of the Union of the Comoros, adopted by referendum on 30 July 2018, revised the 2001 Union Constitution — extending the presidential term to five years (renewable once), ending the island-rotation of the union presidency, and abolishing the separate Constitutional Court by transferring its powers to the Cour Suprême. About Comoros legal coverage
The Union of the Comoros is a federal republic of three islands — Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzuwani (Anjouan), and Mwali (Mohéli) — with a mixed legal system that combines French civil law, Islamic (Sharia) law, and customary law. Primary legislation is enacted by the Assemblée de l'Union des Comores, promulgated by the President, and published in the Journal Officiel de l'Union des Comores; each island also has its own governor and local regulatory competences. Personal-status matters such as marriage, inheritance, and family law are governed substantially by Islamic law and applied through the cadi courts, while the ordinary courts run from the tribunaux de première instance up to the Cour d'appel and the Cour Suprême.
