Brunei Darussalam is a sovereign sultanate with a dual legal system: English common law, inherited from its period as a British protectorate, operates alongside Syariah (Islamic) law. The written Constitution of 1959 is the supreme instrument, and much law is made by Order of the Sultan. Legislation — Acts, Orders, and subsidiary instruments — together with the consolidated revised Laws of Brunei is published by the Attorney General's Chambers and in the Government Gazette (Warta Kerajaan). The Legislative Council (Majlis Mesyuarat Negara) is an appointed advisory body. The civil courts run from the Magistrates' Courts through the Intermediate Court to the Supreme Court (High Court and Court of Appeal), while the Syariah Courts operate a parallel hierarchy.
