What is the supreme law of Belize and when did it take effect?
The Belize Constitution, scheduled to the Belize Constitution Act (Chapter 4 of the Laws of Belize), took effect on 21 September 1981 and is the supreme law of Belize — any other law inconsistent with it is void to the extent of the inconsistency. It is enacted by the National Assembly and published by the Government of Belize.

Why Lawstronaut for Belizean legal research
Belizean legal information is spread across the Laws of Belize, the Government Gazette, the National Assembly, ministries, statutory regulators, and the courts. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.
Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.
About Belize legal coverage
Belize is a common-law jurisdiction rooted in the English legal tradition and a Commonwealth realm, with King Charles III as head of state represented by a Governor-General. The Belize Constitution of 1981 is the supreme law; primary legislation is enacted by the bicameral National Assembly (House of Representatives and Senate), published in the Belize Government Gazette, and consolidated in the Laws of Belize. Regulatory policy sits across ministries and statutory agencies — the Central Bank of Belize, the Financial Services Commission, the Office of the Supervisor of Insurance and Private Pensions, and the Public Utilities Commission, among others. The court hierarchy runs from the Magistrate's Courts and the Supreme Court (High Court) through the Court of Appeal to the Caribbean Court of Justice, Belize's final court of appeal since 2010. Legal materials are published in English, the official language.
Belizean law continues to modernise: the Data Protection Act, 2021 introduced a national data-protection framework, ongoing constitutional review through the People's Constitution Commission has proposed reforms, and the Laws of Belize are periodically revised and consolidated — so citations to outdated provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps a Belize legal research answer correct today.
