Q

Which regulation protects the aboriginal tribes and their reserved areas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

A

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Protection of Aboriginal Tribes) Regulation, 1956 (ANPATR), promulgated under the powers relating to Union Territories and notified in the Gazette of India, restricts entry into and activity within notified tribal reserves — including those of the Jarawa and the Sentinelese — and has been supplemented by later notifications of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

WHY LAWSTRONAUT

Why Lawstronaut for Andaman and Nicobar Islands legal research

Andaman and Nicobar Islands legal information is spread across central legislation, Presidential regulations, the Union Territory administration and its departments, regulators, courts, and gazette sources. For humans, that means slow research. For AI systems, it's a bigger problem: fragmented source access, inconsistent formats, missing provenance, and weak citation trails.

Lawstronaut turns those sources into one structured legal data layer — source links, metadata, full text, versioning, and API/MCP access. Your product or agent retrieves the legal source directly instead of relying on generic web search or unverified model memory. Every answer carries a citation, a timestamp, and a link to the official document — the provenance that makes a legal research platform defensible to auditors and regulators.

About Andaman and Nicobar Islands legal coverage

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a Union Territory of India within a common-law tradition. The Territory has no legislature of its own: it is administered by a Lieutenant Governor on behalf of the President, with the Ministry of Home Affairs overseeing at the Union level. Primary law is therefore central — Acts of the Parliament of India as extended to the Islands, supplemented by Presidential regulations made for the Union Territory and by the rules, notifications, and orders of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, published in the Gazette of India and the Andaman and Nicobar Official Gazette. Judicial authority runs through the Calcutta High Court, which sits as a Circuit Bench at Port Blair, down to the district judiciary. Legal materials are published primarily in English and Hindi.

The law in force in the Islands moves with national reform and with the Territory's own environmental and tribal-protection regime: India's new criminal codes — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, all of 2023 — replaced the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act from 1 July 2024 and apply in the Territory; the capital Port Blair was officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in September 2024; and Coastal Regulation Zone / Island Protection Zone notifications and tribal-reserve protections are revised periodically — so citations to superseded provisions can simply be wrong. Point-in-time data straight from the source is what keeps an Andaman and Nicobar Islands legal research answer correct today.
